Main Features

The Cytotoxicity Profiling project is part of the applied research and development mandate of the Alberta Centre
for Toxicology. It is a multi-agency collaborative initiative funded by the Alberta Ministry of Health and it’s main
objective is to determine the overall toxicity of chemicals found in environmental media such as water and air.

The final goal is to enhance environmental health protection and surveillance capacity through the development
and implementation of leading edge health risk assessment tools aligned with toxicity testing in the 21st century.

We use advanced technology, a real time cell analyzer (xCELLigence® RTCA from ACEA Biosciences Inc.,
San Diego, CA, USA) in conjunction with other tools, to screen hundreds of chemicals relevant from a public
health perspective.

The data generated are applied in conjunction with other information (e.g., biomonitoring) to predict potential
human health risks, to classify chemicals according to their toxicity, to develop health based guidelines, and
to prioritize chemicals that need further testing or public health action.
